My Top Ten List

The following is my all time top ten list and the reasons why. Some of the sleds I already own and others I hope to. Some may be out of reach but you never know. So here we go-

  • #10 1971 SkiDoo Blizzard Those of you who know me may be surprised to see a SkiDoo in my top ten. But a fact is a fact the Blizzard is a awesome sled. If you have ever heard a 775 run you would be a fan too!
  • #9 1971 Rupp Magnum Red , black, free air motor, tuned pipes. Enough said.
  • #8 1971 Arctic Cat Puma Not a rare sled by any means but if you have ever road one you know why it makes my top ten. Short, light, quick and easy to maneuver. These sleds are a blast to ride. Easy to "hop up" and make a great race sled. Hold there value well and are easy to resell.
  • #7 1980 Arctic Cat SnoPro Rarest sled on my list. Low, sleek and incredibly powerful. Tremendous racing heritage. These sleds are on most guys wish list. Ever notice in all the pictures of these sleds being raced the driver looks WAY to big for the machine?
  • #6 1974 Yamaha GPX I have to confess I don't know much about these machines but I know I want one! Great racing heritage and maybe the meanest looking hood of all time.
  • #5 1973 Polaris Starfire With all do respect for Polaris lovers everywhere, I just don't like most Polarises. But as far as historic sleds go you have to include the Starfire. Beautiful, powerful a great all around machine. One of Polarises greatest all around sleds. Always associated with one of racing all time greats, Bob Eastman. After meeting Bob and finding out what a great guy he is any sled good enough for Bob Eastman is good enough for me!
  • #4 1972 Arctic Cat EXT Arctic Enterprises completely redesigned the 72 Ext even after a very popular and competitive 1971 model. Complete new chassis, fiberglass belly pan, juice brakes, mono leaf ski's etc. The 72 EXT was one of Arctic's most successful race sleds of all time. No wonder they where banned for a time in early 71/72 season by most race organizations. These sleds where raced by independents for many years throughout the 70's and where very competitive. Expensive new, expensive now, expensive to restore but well worth it. I own a 72 400 and more people ask me about it then any other sled.
  • #3 1971 Arctic Cat Ext I own one of these. To me the 71 EXT is to vintage sleds as 1970 Chevelles are to local car shows.Wildly popular sleds. Hold there value well. I wish I had 50 of them to sell! The 340 version was Arctic's most successful racer. Unfortunately I think this sled is cloned more than any other. Basically take a 71 Puma, drop in a free air twin, bolt on a re pop hood and now you suddenly have a EXT. Mine is a 292 model with only 241 made but there sure seems to be a lot of them out there. Buyer beware!
  • #2 1971 Skiroule Racer If you where lucky enough to see one of these is the fall of 1970 you must have thought it was from outer space! Wedge hood, free air motor, wild green color and those chrome shocks in the back. This wasn't your fathers boxy Panther or SkiDoo Oly. Ultra rare race sleds way ahead of there time. Kind of a checkered race history but definitely a sled on my bucket list. Hard to even find one of these sleds for sale unless you are in the green Skiroule inner circle. The ones I have come across always seem to be basket case. If you are reading this and have one for sale let me know!
  • now drum roll please....... # 1 1969 Arctic Cat Panther Mod! When the door dropped on the Arctic race trailer in Eagle River Wisc for the 1969 World Championship and Roger Jannsen and the boys from Thief River unloaded the top secret 744 powered J-LO free air Panthers I am sure you could hear jaws dropping all the way back to Roseau and into Canada. These sleds just look mean! With the Bosscat hood with the gigantic opening to feed the monster J-Lo motor. Megaphone out the side. Sinister black. These machines where unlike any others out there. With Roger "the bullet" Jannsen blowing away the field Arctic went on to also take 2nd, 3rd 4th and 5th. This changed everything and really made the competition take notice and increase there race efforts. Not every Mod Panther is the monster 744 I am currently restoring a 300 Hirth Mod Panther. But that is not the reason its on list at number one. I have wanted one for a long time. Unfortunately Mod Panthers are probably the 2nd most cloned sleds next to the 71 EXT.

With there sinister good looks, undisputed racing heritage and limited availability the 1969 Mod Panther is my all-time # 1 sled.

Random vintage snomachines thoughts

Why is it easier to stay motivated and restore a sled in the summer instead of winter? Right now is the best time in years to purchase a vintage sled. There are great deals where ever you look. Still working on the "judging guidelines" turns out it's a LOT MORE work than I had originally thought. If everyone hates e-bay so much why does everyone use it? Summer show in Cold Spring July 31 Come out and have a good time. It's free! Just got the new VSCA magazine, great coverage of CSM Thanks Mike. Still need a motor plate for my 1969 Panther. Winter is less than 6 months away. Why is it everyone wants a Puma but you can't give away a Cheetah? Next CSM meeting at my house July 26, free beer! Confirmed a 1972 Panther 440 for sale in St Joe.....hope you are sitting down $1200 I heard it is really nice but lets face it there isn't a 72 Panther on the planet worth $1200! I have a really nice one and paid $350 for it. Old doesn't always equal valuable. Why is easier to write when you drink a glass of wine? Well that's enough for one night and my glass is empty.

RALLY 2010

The 18th Annual Classic Sno Machines Rally was a tremendous success! Perfect weather and a huge turn out in the feature class made for a great show.I have never seen that many Brut's and Skiroules in one place. Everything from plain old bubble hoods to RTX's to a cross country Brut and of course the 1970 RT 800! There where also many other beautiful sleds as well as a lot of cutter type pull behinds a may need to have there own class next year. Best of show went to Dan Schuneman with a beautiful 1964 Arctic Cat 140D. Attached is the list of winners. Next years feature was announced at the end of the awards and will be Chaparral for 2011.

Rare Skiroule to be at 2010 Rally

Skiroule RT 800A Minnesota Skiroule collector has agreed to bring part of his collection to this years rally including a ultra rare RT-800 This is considered by most to be one of the most desirably of all Skiroules. Sporting the 793 Hirth triple the most unbelieve part about this sled is it's all original! This sled is incrediable rare and believed to be the ONLY unrestored RT-800 on the planet according to the owner. But don't let this beast scare you we want any type of green machine from the one bangers all the way up to the 793 for this years show.
